Proctor Memorial Park

Committee Meeting

August 6, 2008

Maribeth Alspach opened the meeting at 5:30 p.m. and welcomed all members to the meeting.  We had six people in attendance.

Indiana Casualties

CW5 Frank Vaughn reports the loss of three Indiana soldiers in the last 48 – 72 hours.  Sgt Gary Henry was a 1992 WCHS graduate.  The other two soldiers were from Madison and Pendleton, Indiana.  One additional Indiana soldier was seriously injured in the roadside bomb blast that killed Sgt. Henry.  Committee members offer to assist the military or the families of these fallen heroes in any way needed.  Frank will advise Maribeth of funeral arrangements for Sgt. Henry as they become available.  Committee members decide to purchase bricks for Sgt. Henry for Proctor Park.  The money will be donated by individual committee members and not taken from the Proctor Park Fund.  Any one wishing to donate to the purchase of these bricks should give their donation to Maribeth.  Sgt. Henry was a Captain for the Indianapolis Fire Department and we will purchase a brick for the Heroes section as well if his department doesn’t.

TAPS

Mrs. Proctor (Joe’s mom) shares information about a weekend program that she and her husband attended this past weekend in Indianapolis.  TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) is a group that travels throughout the country to help the families of those who have been killed while serving their country.  Mrs. Proctor says the program was very beneficial and they were very grateful for the opportunity to participate.

Johnson County Fair Booth

Maribeth thanks all who worked at the fair booth this year.  The efforts of these volunteers greatly exceeded her expectations.  We took in over $3,000.00 and sold 31 bricks during Fair week.  Sue Galloway’s suggestion to raffle Maribeth believes running the special pricing on the bricks really helped especially with the increase in gas prices and the current economy.  The bricks have been ordered and should be delivered August 15th.  The Public Works employees will get them installed.

Support Flags

Maribeth has a flag that she is asking residents to sign that will be sent to Eddie Proctor in Iraq.  Eddie requested a town flag that he could display showing support from his home town.  The flag was donated and not paid for with Proctor Park funds.  At least two New Whiteland Town Council members have offered to purchase additional flags and Maribeth will order 4 more for local residents that are currently serving overseas or preparing for deployment.  Mrs. Proctor has a grandson in Afghanistan now and another grandson (Eddie Jr.) being deployed in November.  Charlie Linville and Nick Alspach are both being deployed in November as well.  We will have flags at the New Whiteland

Town Hall for residents to sign and will mail them to our brave men and women who are serving overseas to show our concern, support and appreciation for their service.

Fundraisers

At our last meeting we decided to gather information to hold a One Day Festival in the East Park with a community day atmosphere.  Maribeth has talked to a gentleman with Sound Off Amusements who has a few small rides.  She has cost information on hiring this company.  She has not received a quote on fireworks.  After some discussion it is decided we will postpone the festival until spring and see if we can tie it to the Annual Proctor Park Charity Ride if the Eagles will host another one for us.  We need time to plan, coordinate and advertise this event.

Sue Galloway states CPCSC will be holding another competition / fundraiser of some kind to raise money for Proctor Park.  They will make the presentation of the funds at the Veteran’s Day program again this fall if possible.  Sue asks if Patti Wade would be willing to count the money daily if they hold another Jar Wars.  Patti says Main Source will provide that service in New Whiteland will pick up the deposits each day.

Maribeth shows samples of the new digitized logo that Stella Owen has done on our shirts.  It looks really nice and is now available if anyone wants to order a shirt, sweatshirt or jacket with an embroidered Proctor Park logo.

The WCHS National Honor Society has offered to promote Proctor Park at the 1st two home football games this year.  They will pass out literature or brick orders –if we want them to.  Maribeth thanks the CPCSC for all of their support with this project – our students are so amazing and have played such a vital role in the success of this project.

WCHS Athletic Director Butch Zike has offered to have students stuff fliers in the athletic programs.  We need to prepare a flier and get copies printed and delivered to Butch within the next 2 weeks.  Stella Owen will work on designing the flier.
